The introduction to this module showed this video about formative assessment in game based learning (GBL). Before I progress any further into this module, I want to reflect on the elements within this task, that epitomizes some deep understandings I now have about GBL. Note: it did not involve digital games.

  • collaborative and social (with lots of conversation happening) – between and across teams
  • cards – game element
  • engagement, motivation, focus
  • critical thinking skills and problem solving skills evoked
  • interactive, hands on activity
  • explicit assessment – with rubric
  • informal ongoing assessment – by teacher questioning students show understanding and transference of key concepts (from card to island map)
  • time element
